London Fashion Week: Confessions of a (style) Stalker

February 19, 2013 in Fashion, Influences

It’s London Fashion Week  - it’s London Fashion Week. #LFW

Confession #1:  I’ve lived in London 9 years and I had never been to #LFW (yep – I speak in hashtags these days… #Hipstermuch?!).  Why? Well I think for a number of reasons. Intimidation mainly. How could I ever mingle with London’s finest fashionistas? How could I ever put an outfit together worthy of any kind of scrutiny!?  But this year was going to be my year. We applied to be an official blogger at #LFW, but it seems that our application is still being processed (read: I think they’re just letting us down gently)… don’t they know who we are, etc, etc…

Anyway, that wasn’t going to stop me! You don’t need a pass to enjoy fashion week.  So we headed to Somerset House, on saturday night (after a few costume changes) to see what all the fuss was about.

Confession #2:  I’m a little celebrity obsessed.  I mean, I never used to be – but London is full of these non-humans (the other day we saw Thandie Newton on the high road – OMG!) and a chance encounter never fails to excite me!  So any excuse to have all of these strange creatures in one place was draw enough.  And I wasn’t disappointed…. in the courtyard we rubbed shoulders with Caroline Issa and Laura Whitmore – and that was within about 10 minutes!  Oh and some others… *

Confession #3:  OK, I probably shouldn’t admit this one, but I did giggle quite a lot at inappropriate outfits.  Firstly, it was approximately 2 degrees Celsius (that is cold people!) and yet some thought we were in LA (well some had just got off the plane…! and insisted on letting everyone know!).  Secondly, I think there should be some health and safety notices for attendees at Somerset House – it’s located in a courtyard surrounded by cobbled paths (no, there is no red carpet)!  So those super high, super spikey stilettos and quirky ironic flatforms / platforms… aren’t going to work. In retrospect perhaps it’s kept a secret on purpose, so that all us fashion novices can feel smug about our “sensible” / “comfortable”, shoes / outfits.

Confession #4:  I went twice.  No, a lack of invite wasn’t going to stop me.  I heard on the grapevine (read: every social media platform – except instagram obvs as i’ve given that up for lent) that a number of my favourite fashion bloggers (@susiebubble,@garancedore,@stylecrusader ) were in town, so I decided I was going get out there and get involved. And how did that go you ask!?! welllll… yep, I bottled it.  My inner introvert shone through and I watched like some weirdo creep from the corner of the courtyard with my big shades and even larger latte.  But you all were beautiful…

Confession #5: And this brings me to my final #LFW confession.  I need to give all you fashion bloggers out there a bit more kudos – what you do is pretty amazing. The competition out there is fierce. Hundreds of bloggers and photographers vying for a chance to shoot the most stylish or different fashionistas and with only a few seconds to get it absolutely right. Standing out in the cold and weather waiting to find that perfect shot. I hold my hands up to you, you’ve certainly changed the way fashion is viewed nowadays, and for the better.  Fashion seems to be getting more real. Keep it up!

I want more! I’ll be back London Fashion Week!

*I wanted to keep this in the small print, but I even saw some TOWIE stars (that’s The Only Way Is Essex for all you non-UK readers, it’s a scripted “reality” TV show).
